UK Excel User Conference

The second installment of the UK Excel user conference was held the 7th and 8th of October 2009. This was a re-run of the massively oversubscribed event we ran back in April 2009.
The event was again generously hosted at Microsoft London in Victoria, at no cost to the attendees. The event was scheduled for around 100 delegates, in the end about 90 actually attended.
Simon did two sessions, Working smart with the Excel Grid and Introductory VBA. Although the content was adapted somewhat in recognition of the skill level of the audience.

Working smart with the Excel Grid

This session covered the following areas:

  • Various aspects of paste special
  • Various smart uses of select special (Blanks, numbers, errors etc)
  • Some issues with Data Validation
  • Various ways to transpose lists etc, and some of their limitations
  • Working with Windows and Workspaces
  • Presentation workbook available here.

Introductory VBA

This session covered the following areas:

  • How Names connect everything together
  • How to set up the IDE for proper development
  • How to hyperlink to a VBA sub or function
  • Data types in Excel and VBA, and some of the limitations of the VBA IDE
  • Smart use of the macro recorder
  • How and why to use Option Explicit, but also be aware of its limitations
  • Difference between functions and UDFs for use on worksheets
  • Presentation workbook available here.

The resources are available here (near the bottom of the table).
